The Carney government just dropped a $3.2 billion food security strategy and it’s worth understanding what it actually does. Right now, only 11 cents of every dollar you spend on groceries reaches the farmer who grew it. Five companies control 80% of the grocery market. And Canada exports billions in agricultural products while turning around and importing processed versions of the same food from the US at a markup. This plan attacks that problem structurally. $1 billion goes toward food terminals and distribution hubs so independent grocers can buy directly from Canadian farmers, cutting out the middleman. The Competition Bureau gets a funding boost to go after the property control tricks big grocers use to block competitors from moving in nearby. And Farm Credit Canada gets $1 billion for domestic food processing so we stop exporting raw product and importing it back as something more expensive. The targets are concrete: expand the Ontario Food Terminal by end of year, open two new food terminals and 10 regional food hubs by 2028. This isn’t a handout to Loblaws. It’s infrastructure to break their stranglehold on the supply chain. Will it fix your grocery bill overnight? No. But building real competition into the system is how you get lasting price relief, not a rebate that disappears after one quarter.

Every day, the people we elected to run a G7 nation spend 45 minutes screaming rehearsed one-liners at each other while backbenchers bang their desks like it’s a hockey game. No answers get given. No policy gets made. No problem gets solved. The minister reads a non-answer from a cue card. The opposition screams. Repeat 35 times. Camera cuts to someone rolling their eyes. Done. And we wonder why voter turnout keeps dropping. Foreign observers watching Question Period for the first time genuinely cannot believe this is how a serious democracy operates. He’s an 86 year old German academic who writes books nobody buys and hosts a yearly networking event for people who are already powerful enough to not need the networking. The WHO is 194 member countries occasionally agreeing on health guidelines that those same countries then ignore whenever it’s politically inconvenient. It is chronically underfunded, routinely overruled, and has less enforcement power than your municipal bylaw office. These are not hidden rulers of the world. They are PowerPoint presentations with a budget. The people who have you scared of these organizations do not want you asking where your actual problems come from. They don’t want you looking at your own provincial government, your own city council, your own grocery chain, your own landlord. It’s a lot easier to fear a Swiss ski resort than to engage with something you can actually do something about. You got played. It happens. But you should probably know.
