The key issue raised: farmers donโt only need production support, they need storage, market access, and better ways to secure value after harvest.

A significant milestone for members of the PGP Driefontein Study Group in Mpumalanga.
Collectively, these subsistence farmers planted 26.50 hectares of maize during the 2025/2026 production season and are now harvesting their crop.

PGP farmer Mlotshwa planted 40ha of maize with support from SACTA, with BEFAP recently conducting yield estimation research on the crop.
A mid-summer drought during tasselling affected production, with yields now estimated at around 5 tons for the season. This is why farmer support, research and climate resilience matter.
