When we talk about the mental health impact of adverse events, it is necessary to consider the strengths and resources that help students cope and succeed, along with the prevention of mental health problems. This research explored the mental health network of students in India during COVID-19 and found that hopelessness, worthlessness, and nervousness remain major risks, while purpose, meaning, and engagement act as powerful protectors. Further, having strengths like psychological capital (PsyCap) and mindfulness helps reduce stress by boosting positive emotions and keeping students engaged in their studies. Positive emotions don’t directly improve grades, but they help build mindfulness and PsyCap, which in turn improve engagement and academic performance. Therefore, mental health isn’t just about avoiding problems—it’s also about building resources that make students stronger. If higher educational institutions and policymakers promote mindfulness, hope, self-efficacy, resilience, optimism, and positive emotions, students won’t just survive challenges—they’ll flourish academically and emotionally.
