When Jews fled the Spanish Inquisition, Syrians welcomed them — Aleppo became a hub of Jewish life. But instead of gratitude, they helped carve off Southern Syria (Palestine), displaced its people, and later occupied the Golan Heights. History remembers. ."In its heyday, the community numbered between 25,000 to 30,000, said Joel Veldkamp, editor of the Syrian Studies Association Bulletin. He noted that the local community had a long history of welcoming Jews from abroad, including those fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, as well as Italian Jews who moved to Syria in the 18th century. “The community ran hospitals, schools and orphanages. Aleppo was a center for religious studies for Jews,” he said. He added that an Aleppo synagogue housed one of the oldest copies of the Old Testament, known as the Aleppo codex." #Syria #Palestine #AleppoCodex wapo.st/46qlHSA

1/3 #Elijah suddenly appears onstage in #1Kings17, and remains more or less onstage until #2Kings2, when he is taken away to heaven. The image below is from 1 Kings 17 (#AleppoCodex), just after he has raised the widow's son.

#MasoreticNotes 4: Masora Parva (Mp) cont. The pic shows a page of the #AleppoCodex (containing the stunning #Psalm98 which I've been thinking about recently). The highlighted annotations are Mp notes. Many (not all!) Mp notes count things (the green-ringed ones are not counts)

A slightly faster option is to go directly to: mgketer.org/kazms where there is a list of bks which, when clicked, takes you to a list of chrs, and then the image. I prefer mgketer site, as one can zoom in on images a lot more than was possible on the old AleppoCodex site.

Containing portions of Jeremiah, Zechariah, Proverbs, and Chronicles, these Hebrew manuscripts are early examples of the #MasoreticText. Unlike most #HebrewBible manuscripts written in the region around Egypt, these texts do not follow the format of the #AleppoCodex.

The #LeningradCodex (AD 1008) is the earliest complete copy of the Hebrew Old Testament, but is neither so fair, nor so well made as the #AleppoCodex. Verses and physical line beginnings don’t align. Also, there are no spaces marking stanzas.

Now for early manuscripts of Psalm 1: The most important is the beautiful #AleppoCodex (10th century). The scribe always ensures that verses (= modern verses) begins a new line (lines 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8). However, mid-line spaces, don’t correspond with our ideas of poetic breaks.

The #AleppoCodex is seen as the most authoritative source document for both the original biblical text and its vocalization. 1947 Muslim rioters burned down Aleppo synagogue. 1958 Aleppo Codex was smuggled(/stolen) back to Jerusalem by Mossad. thefullwiki.org/Aleppo_Codex
