⚡️ Session 14 of the ECPS Virtual Workshop Series explores how artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems are transforming democratic politics. As digital technologies increasingly mediate political communication, participation, and governance, new questions arise about the relationship between AI, populism, democratic legitimacy, and political representation.
⚡️ Bringing together perspectives from political science, communication studies, and digital governance, the session examines how algorithmic infrastructures reshape democratic deliberation, identity formation, and public discourse. From AI-assisted governance and generative AI in cultural heritage to big tech’s influence on political consciousness and algorithmically driven polarization, the discussion addresses the evolving challenges that emerging technologies pose to democratic institutions and civic life.
🔎 Core Theme: How do algorithms, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms reshape “the people,” democratic participation, and the future of political representation?

🧭 Why This Session Matters: As AI, big tech, and algorithmic systems increasingly shape public discourse and governance, understanding their impact on democratic participation, populist mobilization, and political representation has become essential. Session 14 explores how emerging technologies are redefining the relationship between citizens, institutions, and “the people”in an algorithmically mediated political landscape.
