Elon Musk is done waiting on the chip industry. Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI are teaming up to build Terafab, a massive chip factory starting in Austin, Texas. If suppliers can’t meet the exploding demand for AI, robotics, and space tech, build it yourself. Terafab aims to produce next-gen chips and memory at unprecedented scale, targeting up to 1 terawatt of annual compute power. These chips will fuel: • Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, robotaxis, and billions of Optimus humanoid robots. • SpaceX’s orbital infrastructure, including solar-powered AI data centers scaling to megawatts (and eventually terawatts) in space. Musk says current global chip growth (~20%/year) covers only a tiny fraction of needs: “We either build Terafab or we don’t have the chips.” It starts with an advanced prototyping fab in Austin for fast iterations, but the full-scale beast will need thousands of acres and 10 GW of power, likely beyond Giga Texas.
