Il conto alla rovescia è iniziato per uno degli appuntamenti più originali della stagione musicale londinese: il 18 luglio 2026 la Royal Albert Hall ospiterà “BBC Proms: Prog Rog – A Fanfare for the Common Man”, un evento che celebra l’incontro tra rock progressivo e musica classica.
Ma cosa sono i BBC Proms? Nato nel 1895 dalla visione del direttore d’orchestra Henry Wood, il BBC Proms rappresenta il più importante festival estivo di musica classica del Regno Unito. Ogni estate trasforma il Royal Albert Hall nel cuore pulsante della musica dal vivo, con l’obiettivo di portare il meglio della musica classica al pubblico più vasto possibile. Negli ultimi anni il festival ha ampliato ulteriormente i propri orizzonti con una serie di eventi innovativi in tutto il Regno Unito, rimanendo fedele alla sua missione originaria: rendere la grande musica accessibile a tutti.
E proprio nello spirito di questa apertura nasce “Prog Rog – A Fanfare for the Common Man”, in cui si celebra la rivoluzione musicale del prog, attraverso alcuni dei brani più iconici, rivisitati in una nuova dimensione orchestrale.
A presentare la serata sarà Stuart Maconie, pluripremiato broadcaster, voce di BBC Radio 6 Music e autore di numerosi libri, tra cui spicca “With a Little Help From Their Friends – The Beatles Changed the World. But Who Changed Theirs?”, un affascinante viaggio tra le persone che hanno contribuito a formare la band che ha cambiato la Gran Bretagna e influenzato la musica e la cultura in tutto il mondo.
Per l’occasione saranno eseguiti nuovi arrangiamenti orchestrali dedicati alla musica di Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Renaissance e altri grandi protagonisti della storia della musica.
Come si ricorda nella stessa presentazione dei BBC Proms: “Che siate raffinati intenditori di musica classica o pensiate che la musica classica non faccia per voi, nelle otto settimane di concerti c’è qualcosa per tutti.” E questo evento ne è forse la dimostrazione più evidente.
Anche la scelta del titolo “A Fanfare for the Common Man” non è casuale. Il brano, composto nel 1942 da Aaron Copland e successivamente reinterpretato in modo magistrale da Emerson, Lake & Palmer, è diventato uno dei simboli più riconoscibili dell'incontro tra linguaggio classico e prog. Non è quindi soltanto il titolo dell’evento, ma un omaggio e un invito ad un dialogo creativo.
È arrivato il momento di riconoscere che prog e musica classica condividono molti più punti di contatto di quanto la maggior parte delle persone possa immaginare.
