The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) has stated that civilians were among at least 14 people killed by troops in Ndzerem-Nyam village in Cameroon's restive North West region last week. This contradicted a statement by the Ministry of Defence that all those killed were “armed terrorists” who had opened fire on approaching soldiers. The attack reportedly occurred between 3 am and 4 am on Sunday, April 26, 2026, during a cultural festival in the village. According to information gathered by CHRDA, Defence and Security Forces invaded the village, targeting armed separatist fighters said to be present at the event. An exchange of gunfire between security forces and separatist fighters ensued. The rights group said “at least 14 civilians were initially reported killed,” with several houses and about 38 motorcycles set ablaze. Approximately four homes were reportedly burnt. Among the victims identified is Yaah Ntsengong (also known as Yaah Nshalai), a member of the royal family whose husband was reportedly killed by separatist fighters on September 29, 2025. While it remains disputed whether she was working with separatists, the Mindef statement grouped her among female victims it claimed were working as a "logisticians" for self-styled separatist commander, General Capo. CHRDA says other civilian casualties include Sylvester Simoben, a bike rider, and Fabrice Lukonge, a carpenter from Kai who had gone to Ndzerem-Nyam for work, along with five of his apprentices. In contrast, Mindef maintained that 11 men killed in the attack were “heavily armed terrorists”. The government has not yet released an independent account of the incident. CHRDA suggested that the military attack, which followed a tip-off from the population, could be linked to intercommunity rivalry. It noted that tensions had escalated days earlier when an uninvited delegation from the neighbouring village of Gwan attempted to force their way into the Ndzerem-Nyam Palace during the cultural festival, despite objections from the Fon of Ndzerem-Nyam and village elites. The rights group also alleged that armed separatist fighters were among the delegation from Gwan village and had reportedly imposed a ban on the use of mobile phones at the festival. An unresolved traditional dispute between the two villages may have contributed to the tensions, CHRDA said. CHRDA President, Barrister Agbor Nkongho, strongly condemned the killing of civilians, the burning of homes, and the destruction of civilian property. CHRDA Calls For Independent Investigation Into Mbat Attack The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) has called on judicial authorities in Donga Mantung Division to conduct a prompt, independent, and impartial investigation into the attack on Mbat village that left over 850 people displaced. In a statement signed by its president, Agbor Nkongho, on Thursday, the human rights organization said the investigation should identify all those responsible, whether direct perpetrators or accomplices, and ensure they are held accountable in accordance with the law. An attack, attributed to Mbororo militia, occurred on the night of Friday, February 13. Though no lives were lost, the attackers burned hundreds of houses, took away six motorbikes, destroyed 155 maize farms, and stole 38 goats. They also burned down Government School Mbat and the Baptist Church Upper Mbat, while looting 15 provision stores. The villagers were able to escape into the bushes as the attackers carried out the act. Several videos believed to have come from the area showed flames emanating from houses. Every mistake even from years ago is resurrected. And what do we do? Instead of encouraging them, we dissect them. Instead of mentoring them, we mock them. Instead of strengthening them, we attack them. Yet tomorrow, we are the same people complaining: “The older generation does not want to give the youth a chance.” But when the youth step forward, we are the first to pull them down. ⸻ The Cameroonian Reality In our context, public office is already difficult. The terrain is tough. The scrutiny is intense. The political space is complex. But beyond those structural challenges, we add something else; hostility from within. To some naysayers, no one is ever fit and proper to lead. If you are bold, you are called arrogant. If you are calm, you are labelled weak. If you speak clearly, you are accused of over-ambition. If you stay quiet, you are accused of lacking courage. For some, it is either them or the highway. This mindset does not strengthen democracy. It suffocates it. ⸻ We Are Killing Vision Before It Matures Cameroon has visionary young leaders. We see them. Young lawyers trying to reform institutions. Young councillors pushing local development. Young professionals entering politics for the right reasons. Young women breaking barriers in public life. But instead of debating their ideas, we attack their character. We insult. We speculate. We spread negativity. We drag families into conversations that should remain civil. And slowly, dreams die. Some withdraw quietly. Some decide private life is safer. Some relocate. Then we complain about a leadership vacuum. ⸻ Let Us Be Honest With Ourselves We cannot demand generational change while discouraging generational courage. Encouragement does not mean blind loyalty. Support does not mean silence in the face of wrongdoing. But it does mean fairness. It does mean civility. It does mean proportionality. If we truly want renewal in this country in our councils, our parliament, our professional bodies, our political movements, we must create an environment where stepping forward does not mean being destroyed. ⸻ A Personal Appeal Leadership requires courage. Renowned human rights advocate, Barrister Agbor Balla, has called on separatists in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions to allow citizens to go out and vote on October 12. In a statement issued this Thursday, Balla, who heads the Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), urged separatist fighters to “exercise restraint and cease all acts of intimidation that may hinder the electoral process.” His appeal adds to mounting calls for separatists to permit free movement on election day, after they called for a lockdown that many observers say could favor the ruling party, in power for over four decades. Le thème de cette année, "Rendre compte dans le meilleur des mondes - L'impact de l'intelligence artificielle sur la liberté de la presse et les médias", nous invite à réfléchir profondément à la manière dont les technologies émergentes remodèlent le journalisme et le paysage de l'information. L'intelligence artificielle promet d'améliorer la rapidité, la portée et l'efficacité de la production et de la diffusion des informations. Cependant, elle présente également de sérieux défis : la propagation de la désinformation, les "deepfakes", les menaces de surveillance et l'érosion potentielle de l'indépendance éditoriale. Dans ce meilleur des mondes, défendre la liberté de la presse signifie non seulement protéger les journalistes des menaces traditionnelles, mais aussi sauvegarder l'intégrité et la crédibilité de l'information à l'ère numérique. Dans de trop nombreuses régions du monde, dont la nôtre, les journalistes sont victimes de harcèlement, d'emprisonnement et de violence simplement parce qu'ils font leur travail. La censure, la captation des médias et l'utilisation abusive de la technologie continuent de porter atteinte au droit du public à l'information.
