They had “pastor groupies” in the first century too:
The church in Corinth was split into factions:
“I follow Paul”
“I follow Apollos”
“I follow Cephas (Peter)”
“I follow Christ”
Paul confronts it head-on and pleads with them:
“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)
Then he asks the killer questions:
“Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?” (1 Corinthians 1:13)
The problem wasn’t the leaders — it was the prideful, celebrity-style loyalty that caused division.
Paul even reminds them how he preached in Corinth:
“My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5)
The church belongs to Christ alone. Leaders are just servants.
This warning is still needed today whenever we elevate teachers, denominations, or platforms over Jesus.
Unity in Christ > loyalty to personalities.
