This new study explores the use of random nonlinear projections as an efficient method to compress high-dimensional feature spaces in molecular dynamics simulations, making machine learning tasks faster and more manageable without significant loss of information. 2. The authors demonstrate that random compression can retain the core static and dynamic information of the original high-dimensional feature space, making it possible to perform trajectory analysis more efficiently. This approach is particularly useful for large systems where traditional methods become computationally expensive. 3. The study shows that for systems like NTL9 and the double-norleucin variant of the villin headpiece, random projections can accurately reproduce timescales and metastable states when used as input for machine learning algorithms such as VAMPnets, even with a significantly reduced number of features compared to the original data. 4. An interesting finding is that using multiple independent random projections tends to produce better results than extracting multiple projections from a single network, as it minimizes correlations between the projected features, leading to more robust and consistent clustering and timescale analysis. 5.
