Decolonising data starts with intent: collecting data to serve communities and solve real social challenges, not to extract value or profit from them. As @JimFruchterman, CEO @TechMatters, noted, strong data protection laws and governance standards are essential, especially in the Global South where power imbalances in data systems are most visible. Before collecting data, organisations should ask: What data are we collecting? From whom? For what social good? And how do we prevent harm? Frameworks like the Better Deal for Data Declaration help ground these commitments in practice. Working with the Lake Tanganyika Floating Health Clinic taught us that most data tools fail in low-connectivity communities.
