The UK government has expressed openness to creating a dedicated Sikh regiment in the British Army, similar to the Gurkha Regiment.
British Defence Minister Vernon Rodney Coaker indicated willingness to discuss the proposal with Labour peer Kuldip Singh Sahota, who raised the demand in the House of Lords. Sikhs, who have a long history of service in the British Army dating back to the 1840s and distinguished roles in both World Wars, currently number around 160 in the force.
The renewed discussion signals growing momentum to formally recognise Sikh military contributions within the UK’s armed forces.

Honoured to attend Holla Mohalla alongside Sgt Major Anderson, Sir Major Gen Kendal, MP Jas Athwal and fellow @britisharmy Sikh Soldiers. A powerful celebration of Sikh martial traditions, faith, and vibrant, colorful culture.
Holla Mohalla was established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1701 as a display of Sikh valor, discipline, and unity. It remains a symbol of strength, resilience, and the warrior spirit of the Khalsa.
A huge thanks to @defencesikhnetwork for organizing this incredible event and to @buddhadaluk for their outstanding Gatka presentation and live demonstrations, keeping this legacy alive.
Grateful to serve in a military that embraces diversity and respects our faith. From Ardas (Sikh Prayer) to martial arts, color throwing, and dynamic competitions, the event truly embodied the Sikh spirit.
Proud to uphold this heritage!
