Even the electric ones (Sun Joe, I think, is one brand) are better than nothing! They also sell a nice dethatching rake with the same sort of heavy wire tines for small areas... Got mine at the Depot...

The dethatching rake is the big one. I call it the push-pull rake. The work great, and the angle should be adjustable. The other thing we used as kids to sheer high weds, swung it back and forth.

Thatch is dead grass buildup. You should dethatch every three or so years. Mechanical dethatching is the best. You will have way more than you expect. Like a dump trailer load per acre. Thatch harbors fungal disease & crowds out new seeds.

I’ve been dethatching my yard all day, and prepping it for seed. I’m exhausted, and I just got a thatching rake a few minutes ago lmao. I’ve been using a leaf rake.

Look at all that dead grass they are removing.

(a) mow it really really short ("scalp it")
(b) run the pull-behind dethatching rake over it
(c) run the mow-n-vac to pick up all the thatch
