According to 2024 data, 14.2% of people aged 15 - 34 in the EU have left formal education or training at least once. 📍 Dropout rates vary widely across countries— from over 30% in the Netherlands to below 4% in Romania, Greece and Bulgaria. 🔍 Why do young people leave education? As shown in the chart below, the main reason across all education levels is that the programme did not meet expectations or was too difficult. This is especially true at higher education levels, where it accounts for over half of all dropouts.
