During the COVID-19 pandemic, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) rapidly emerged as a vital platform for accessing education and building skills when traditional learning was disrupted. Discussion forums (DF) usually play an important role in bridging the gap between the instructor and learners, by building a community that enables interaction, problem solving, and better understanding. Despite its advantages, students’ low engagement still remains a challenge. To fix this problem and facilitate collaborative learning, IITGN-associated researchers developed the Moderator-Augmented Extended Discussion Forum (MAX-DF), based on the Learner-Centric MOOC (LCM) Model’s Learner eXperience Interaction (LxI) component, and other interventions. This redesigned forum was implemented in an actual online course that was conducted in IIT Bombay. After analysing course logs and collecting survey data with advanced modelling techniques, the team was able to identify the key factors that influence forum use. Results from this experiment shed light on how an improved DF increased learner participation, contributing to higher course completion rates and motivation. The study also found that performance expectancy, self-efficacy, and perceived uniqueness of the forum were prominent drivers of students’ desire to engage. Such outcomes of practical relevance, can enable other MOOC platforms and universities to adopt this design, making quality education easily accessible, provide support to self-learners, and reduce dropout rates around the world.
