When real earthquake data is scarce, especially for huge events, scientists turn to simulations to estimate how hard the ground will shake. This study analyses three widely used simulation tools and finds something unexpected: their results differ less from how the tools are built than how they are set up. Drawing on over 4500 actual earthquake records, it shows that once each tool is carefully calibrated for the earthquake source, path and local soil effects, their once-divergent estimates fall into close agreement. The lesson: choosing the right settings matters more than the tool itself, and those settings don't always transfer between tools. In an era where health-conscious lifestyles are shaping consumer choices, ‘natural’ and ‘herbal’ are labels that often make products seem safer. Among these, herbal cigarettes have emerged as an option for users looking for an alternative to conventional tobacco smoking. Exploring the validity of this assumption, researchers from IITGN and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign compared popular cigarette brands with two types of herbal cigarettes, those wrapped in tendu leaves, and those that used paper wrappers. To assess their potential health impacts, the team characterised particulate emissions, including size distribution, chemical composition, and oxidative potential. In simple terms, they examined properties of particles released during combustion, such as elemental carbon, organic carbon, metals, and their ability to generate harmful molecules, called reactive oxygen species (ROS), that can damage cells and DNA, leading to oxidative stress. The researchers observed that herbal cigarettes produced around 20% higher concentrations of sub-500-nanometer particles than tobacco cigarettes. Because these ultrafine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and reach the air sacs where oxygen enters the bloodstream, they are considered particularly concerning from a health perspective. They further found that herbal cigarette smoke exhibited higher oxidative potential, indicating a greater capacity to induce oxidative stress. The highest levels of these toxicity indicators were observed in tendu leaf-wrapped herbal cigarettes. These findings challenge the perception of herbal cigarettes as a safer alternative and highlight the importance of evaluating products marketed as ‘natural’ through scientific evidence rather than consumer perception.
