NATS vs Kafka: Why NATS might be your secret weapon 🚀
Kafka = distributed log with complex broker management, ZooKeeper/KRaft, partition rebalancing headaches.
NATS = pure messaging with zero dependencies, single binary, runs in 10MB RAM.
Key differences: Kafka persists everything (disk-bound), NATS is memory-first with optional JetStream persistence.
Kafka's consumer groups need coordination; NATS queue groups are stateless—no rebalancing storms when scaling.
NATS killer features:
• Subject-based routing (no topics/partitions hell)
• Built-in request-reply pattern
• KV store object storage in JetStream
• Leaf nodes for edge/multi-cloud with zero config
Use NATS wildcards for dynamic routing (`orders.*.created`).
JetStream consumers support pull mode for backpressure control—way simpler than Kafka's manual offset management.
For multi-DC, NATS clustered superclusters beat Kafka's MirrorMaker complexity 10x.
Trade-off: Kafka wins for massive retention (months of logs), compliance scenarios, or when you need exactly-once semantics across multiple partitions.
NATS shines for microservices, IoT, real-time systems where simplicity > heavy guarantees.
So, the 80/20 rule: if you don't need Kafka's heavy guarantees, NATS cuts your operational complexity by 90%
