I have never been a supporter of the former Governor of Utah, Jon Huntsman, Jr. However, when announcing his candidacy for President in 2011, he made a profound statement, "But the question each of us wants the voters to answer is who will be the better president, not who's the better American." Previously, after being appointed Ambassador to China by President Obama, Huntsman faced criticism from a number of Republicans, who saw his decision to accept the post, as betrayal. In the face of the rapidly growing polarization, that has seemingly reached its peak, I long for the day, when blind partisan loyalty will no longer be in vogue. This may very well be wishful thinking on my part. The toxic atmosphere of name-calling and extreme hatred has permeated the political discourse, even down do regular Americans, who do not hold political office. The reality is that stripped down to their bare essentials, the constant partisan double standards, the unquestionable acceptance of whatever the ever-changing party line is, and the lack of considerations for any of the likely consequences of public policy, has been a trend. The intense focus on divisive issues that do not impact 97% or more of the population, while the people are struggling more and more to make their ends meet, is a consequence of the divide-and-conquer tactics, where the purpose is to prevent people from working with each other on common goals.
