Is this Unsafe?
Someone uploaded these pictures on Reddit aviation showing part of the wing missing. He wanted to know if it was unsafe.
🔍 What You’re Looking At
• The exposed section on the underside of the wing is part of the wing-to-fuselage fairing or a wing access panel, most likely associated with flap track fairings or maintenance inspection panels.
• The panel is non-structural and aerodynamically fairing in function. It typically houses flap track mechanisms or wiring/conduits, and its primary purpose is to reduce drag and protect internal components—not to bear load or contribute to wing integrity.
✈️ Is It Unsafe to Fly Like This?
In most cases like this:
• It is not unsafe, although it does affect fuel efficiency due to increased drag.
• Aircraft are designed with redundancy and tolerances for such minor aerodynamic discrepancies.
• If the open or missing panel poses no hazard of debris detachment or interference with flight control surfaces, the aircraft can be dispatched under MEL (Minimum Equipment List) with such discrepancies noted for repair at the next opportunity.
📋 What Likely Happened
• The panel likely became detached during a previous flight or was not secured properly after maintenance.
• It’s possible that maintenance personnel deferred its replacement under MEL Category D or similar, allowing for flight operations for a limited number of days.
⚠️ When It Could Be Unsafe
• If the loose panel poses risk of detachment, leading to FOD (Foreign Object Damage).
• If hydraulic, electrical, or flap systems within the compartment are exposed to environmental damage.
• If the drag or vibration affects flight stability—which, in this case, it doesn’t appear to.
✅ Final Assessment:
This is not a safety-critical structural issue. While it should be repaired soon, it does not make the aircraft unairworthy or unsafe for continued operation in the short term. Airlines and pilots follow strict MEL guidelines, and if this aircraft was in service, it most likely met dispatch requirements.
