I had the privilege of speaking at the African Regional Forum on Statistical Use in Parliament at the Global Data Festival in Nairobi, Kenya, where we explored how data and technology can make our nations stronger, smarter, and more resilient. The energy here has been incredible! We discussed how to ensure the numbers our statisticians collect truly help leaders make the best decisions for citizens, and how to finance official statistics sustainably. Across Africa, our national statistics offices are underfunded, understaffed, and often misunderstood by the very people who need our work most. Yet the world is asking more of us. SDGs, climate reporting, poverty tracking, job creation data, gender disaggregation, all of it. More demand, less money. That is the paradox we are living in. Our big lesson from Ghana? Data is not just numbers on a sheet. It is about people and their lives. We decided to make data so helpful that no one could ignore it. Since 2019, we have run the Data for Accountability Project with Parliament of Ghana, ACEPA, and the Hewlett Foundation: make official statistics a living tool in parliamentary work, not a technical report gathering dust on a shelf. We built constituency profiles. Not national averages. Not aggregate reports. Specific data for each MP's district. Poverty rates. School enrollment. Flood risk. Maternal mortality. One MP said the profiles changed how development partners treated her proposals. Another said it helped him see his constituents not as voters, but as people with specific needs. Last month, we released special reports showing how multidimensional poverty affects all 261 districts, helping MPs represent their communities with more targeted support. We built StatsBank, a portal with over 350 indicators accessible by phone or tablet. Parliament and the public no longer wait for our reports. They log in and look. We are also working with KNUST to digitise Ghana's parliamentary Hansards using AI and machine learning. When MPs and government saw how these tools improved lives in their areas, they recognised the value of GSS's work, translating into funding to keep doing it. The lesson? You cannot win the funding argument on technical grounds alone. You win it by making data real, putting numbers in the hands of decision-makers, and speaking the language of your users, not just your methods. My message for Ghana and Africa: let us keep making data truly indispensable. Evidence-based decision-making is no longer optional. It is the foundation of every law passed, every budget approved, every citizen fairly represented. To my team at GDF 2026, thank you for representing our country with excellence. Officials from Standard Chartered Ghana , together with investor clients, engaged with the Ghana Statistical Service on official statistics relating to Ghana’s economic performance. The meeting provided an opportunity for the Service to share insights on key economic indicators, particularly the factors driving the country's disinflation process, regional price variations, and the ongoing GDP and CPI rebasing initiatives. We addressed technical questions on statistical compilation and methodology, including on informal sector coverage in GDP, ensuring that investment analysis is grounded in credible official data. Engagements like these reinforce the critical role of official statistics in shaping sound investment decisions. Over the past two weeks, our Information Management Officer actively participated in the #CadreHarmonisé (CH) Analysis Cycle, first at the 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩, and later at the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and Results Presentation Workshop in Abuja. In Borno, #CBI led the analysis for MMC LGA, coordinating a team of experts to assess food and nutrition security amid complex data environments. The insights generated contributed directly to the national food security outlook, shaping strategic planning for humanitarian response. At the national level, our participation alongside the 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚, 𝐅𝐀𝐎, 𝐖𝐅𝐏, 𝐅𝐄𝐖𝐒𝐍𝐄𝐓, 𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐖𝐀𝐒, and other partners reflects CBI’s growing technical capacity and commitment to evidence-based decision-making — ensuring that every intervention is grounded in accurate, community-centered data. Dear Senator Murray, How absolutely fascinating to watch you lecture about "choice" while simultaneously opposing someone who wants to give people MORE information to make informed decisions! Such dedication to choice - as long as it's the choice you approve of. You claim "the benefits greatly outweigh the risks" for vaccinating pregnant women and children, but where exactly is your evidence? You've provided zero data, zero studies, zero statistical analysis. Just a bold assertion that we're supposed to accept because... you said so? Let's talk actual statistics, shall we? CDC data shows COVID-19 had minimal impact on healthy children throughout the pandemic. Children under 18 represented less than 0.1% of COVID deaths, with the vast majority having significant comorbidities. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported that severe outcomes remained uncommon in pediatric cases. So where exactly are these overwhelming benefits you're referencing? It's particularly rich hearing you champion "choice" while attacking RFK Jr. for wanting insurance companies and patients to have access to more complete risk information. Apparently, "choice" only counts when people choose what you want them to choose. When they might choose differently based on fuller information, suddenly that's problematic? Speaking of choices, perhaps voters should have the choice to know whether your passionate defense of pharmaceutical products has anything to do with campaign contributions from Big Pharma? Or connections to pharmaceutical lobbying groups? Transparency about financial relationships seems relevant when politicians make such emphatic medical recommendations. Just a thought!
