تعاني البرمجيّات الحاليّة من محدوديّة تعاملها مع #البيانات_الضخمة، الخاصة بالبيئة ورصد المناخ، وارتفاعٍ مطردٍ لكلفتها. شجع ذلك باحثي كاوست على تطوير برنامج جبر خطي سمّوه ExaGeoStat، يتيح تحليل البيانات وعرضها بسهولة ودقة وكلفة قليلة.

Mixed #precision fans, here are preliminary results comparing #NVIDIA #P100/#V100/#A100 #GPU when computing #Cholesky to solve 3D spatial #statistics problems. U should compute just enough to reach the application accuracy, not more. Thx @issam_said! #ExaGeoStat #HPC @KAUST_ECRC

I thought that advantages of #ExaGeoStat (relative to ML) for geostats would be accuracy and ability to do parameter inference; advantages of #MachineLearning would be scalability and time to solution.

Basic ML models that follow first physical principles may still have the upper hand compared to artificial neural networks. A nice survey paper on statistical seismology reports results during the last two decades: arxiv.org/pdf/1910.01178.pdf. . #ExaGeoStat is at the right place.

It sounds like a similar debate between #AI and #HPC. There is a difference but a synergistic approach may further increase chances for research breakthrough. And that’s what #ExaGeoStat is all about.
