BREAKING: Did Fine Gael unintentionally or otherswise Illegally Block Independent Candidates From Ireland’s Presidency? 🚨 Before the 2025 Presidential Election, the Fine Gael leadership issued a nationwide directive telling its councillors NOT to nominate any independent candidates through the County Council route. This wasn’t a law. This wasn’t a democratic decision. This was a party order that effectively shut down a constitutional pathway guaranteed under Article 12.4.2° of Bunreacht na hÉireann. And now the case is going to the Supreme Court of Ireland. Here’s why this matters: 🔹 Article 12 gives councillors the constitutional power to nominate presidential candidates. That power belongs to THEM—not political parties. 🔹 Political parties have no constitutional authority to restrict nominations or “whip” councillors on a presidential vote. 🔹 By ordering councillors not to nominate independents, Fine Gael may have: • overridden a constitutional function • blocked democratic participation • interfered with citizens’ political rights • undermined the integrity of the entire nomination process This is bigger than politics. This is about whether a political party can control a constitutional mechanism that belongs to the people. Two cases—Stack and Byrne—challenged the block before the election. Despite clear evidence of interference, both were dismissed in the High Court. Now the Supreme Court must decide: ➡️ Can a political party prevent councillors from exercising their constitutional powers? ➡️ Can a party shut down a nomination route guaranteed in the Constitution? ➡️ Was the 2025 nomination process fundamentally compromised?
