🏴☠️Ada Lovelace: The World's First Computer Programmer
Ada Lovelace, daughter of the poet Lord Byron, is widely acknowledged as the world's first computer programmer. In the 1840s, she worked with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, a mechanical general-purpose computer. Lovelace recognized that the machine had applications beyond pure calculation, envisioning it could manipulate symbols according to rules, which is essentially what computer programming is today.
She wrote extensive notes on Babbage's machine, including an algorithm to compute Bernoulli numbers, which is considered to be the first computer program. Her foresight into the broader potential of computers went far beyond the mechanical calculations of her time, positing that they could compose music, produce graphics, and much more.
Her contributions were not fully recognized until the 20th century, but now Ada Lovelace is celebrated every year on Ada Lovelace Day, which honors women in STEM.
