🧠 Can deep brain stimulation improve gait in advanced Parkinson’s disease, or does its benefit lie in specific gait components rather than overall walking performance?

💡 Using treadmill-based gait analysis in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease, the authors found that subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (DBS-STN) had limited effects on overall gait parameters. However, significant improvements were observed in step length of the clinically worse limb, stance phase duration, and gait asymmetry, suggesting that DBS may selectively modulate specific aspects of gait control and highlighting the importance of individualized postoperative assessment.

Cleared by everyone. Still felt wrong.
50-camera gait analysis found a hip-knee misalignment in an IPL cricketer's bowling stride that routine checks missed entirely.
The right diagnosis changes everything.

🚶♀️🧠 How do aging and cognitive load influence the way we walk?
In a new study, Peter Mukli (@pmukli86) and colleagues examined gait variability and complexity using advanced measures—including coefficient of variation, median absolute deviation, and permutation entropy—within the Semmelweis Study gait assessment framework.
Their findings provide new insights into how aging and increased cognitive demands affect gait dynamics, highlighting the potential of digital gait biomarkers for detecting subtle age-related changes in mobility and cognitive-motor function.
