Visakhapatnam has emerged as the global hub of maritime diplomacy and naval power projection as the Indian Navy hosts the International Fleet Review on an unprecedented scale. Speaking on the occasion, Indian Navy spokesperson Captain Vivek Madhwal said this is the third International Fleet Review conducted in India, with participation from more than 70 naval platforms. The review includes 19 warships from 18 foreign countries, along with ships from the Indian Coast Guard and the Shipping Corporation of India, reflecting the growing international confidence in India as a maritime partner.
A defining highlight of this year’s fleet review is the maiden participation of India’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, symbolising India’s journey towards complete self-reliance in naval shipbuilding. The mobile column also features the indigenously built Kalvari-class submarine, reinforcing India’s underwater warfare capabilities. Several Made-in-India naval platforms—destroyers, frigates, anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft, survey vessels, and diving support vessels—have taken part, showcasing the depth and diversity of indigenous naval design and construction.
The event further witnessed a powerful flypast by naval aviation assets, underlining the full spectrum of India’s maritime air power. Fighters, trainers, helicopters, and long-range maritime patrol aircraft flew in formation, demonstrating the reach, readiness, and operational might of Indian naval aviation.
Captain Vivek Madhwal also highlighted that Visakhapatnam is simultaneously hosting three major international maritime events—the International Fleet Review, the multinational naval exercise MELAN, and the Conclave of Chiefs of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium. Nearly 72 delegations from 72 countries are participating, clearly reflecting the level of global cooperation, mutual trust, and the acceptability of India’s maritime platforms for discussions on issues of shared interest.
The central focus of these engagements remains maritime security, acknowledging that oceans are a global commons. Ensuring the safety, security, and freedom of navigation for transiting vessels lies at the heart of these events. Together, they send a strong message of collective responsibility, cooperative security, and India’s rising stature as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond.
