🇬🇲🇬🇲: Yankuba Darboe, Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority, has urged Gambians to fully embrace digitalisation, describing it as an unavoidable reality that must be accepted rather than an optional choice. Speaking on Wednesday at the validation workshop for The Gambia National Enterprise Architecture, organised by the Gambia Information Technology Agency in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union and GovStack in Kololi, Darboe highlighted the profound transformation that digital systems have brought to revenue collection. Before the introduction of technology, the GRA’s annual revenue stood below one billion dalasis, and even as late as 2006 it remained under three billion dalasis per year, but following the adoption of modern digital solutions, the authority now collects over three billion dalasis in a single month, a success he attributed to technological innovation, adherence to international best practices, and strong strategic partnerships.
Key reforms implemented by the GRA include digital tax stamps that enable real-time tracking of products such as bottled water, capturing details like place of production, manufacturing dates, and taxes due, as well as electronic cargo tracking systems that have replaced manual monitoring with real-time devices capable of detecting irregularities or delays. Furthermore, digitalisation at the ports has streamlined customs procedures, allowing importers to handle documentation, payments, and clearance electronically with minimal human interaction. Darboe concluded by emphasising that digital transformation is fundamentally reshaping how governments, businesses, and societies operate, warning that resisting this shift risks isolation while embracing it positions institutions and individuals to navigate the future effectively.
