🤔 Are Your Values Real - or Just a Personal Brand? We all say we want to live by our values. But ask yourself this: 🧭 Are your values actually helping you to navigate real life? Or are they just hanging on your wall like motivational wallpaper? Too often, our “guiding principles” are clean, curated, and corporate-safe. They sound great in team meetings or self-help exercises - but collapse under pressure, temptation, or truth. Why? Because we’re not trained to interrogate what really drives us. What Most Values Exercises Miss The usual suspects - integrity, service, curiosity, courage - aren’t bad. But they’re often branded versions of ourselves. The version we want to present to the world. That leaves out everything real values must be strong enough to hold: - Desire - Power - Shadow - Selfishness - Mortality - Actual risk If your values can’t hold those, they’re not rooted. They’re rehearsed. Real Life Isn’t Clean Let’s be honest - high performers face daily collisions between their values: 🥇 Your hunger to win vs. your need for peace 🔥 Your drive for excellence vs. your craving for approval 🤝 Your call to serve vs. your desire to be seen 🎯 Your push for progress vs. your fear of losing control 🕊 Your ideal of balance vs. your obsession with results These aren’t flaws. They’re the actual battleground. So if your compass doesn’t account for those tensions, it’s not calibrated for reality - it’s customized for performance reviews. Ask These 5 Questions Instead If you want values that hold up under pressure - that actually guide your decisions when things get messy - start here: 1. What am I afraid to admit I really want? (e.g. “I want to be #1 — not just ‘do my best.’”) 2. What price am I actually willing to pay? (e.g. “I say I value health, but I’d trade sleep for results any day.”) 3. What value do I perform for others - but rarely act on in private? (e.g. “I preach empathy, but I bottle up my own emotions.”) 4. What two values in my life constantly go to war? (e.g. “Ambition vs. presence. They fight daily.”) 5. Which values would I choose if no one were watching? (e.g. “Freedom over stability. Always.”) That’s where your true compass starts to emerge. 🧭 The Downside of “Branded” Values Branded values look good. They win applause. They get “loved” on LinkedIn. But they can also: - Create guilt when you don’t live up to them - Make you feel like a fraud behind closed doors - Block honest decisions in moments that actually matter You don’t need more clarity. You need more honesty. Because when your values finally match your actions - even in your messiest moments - that’s when they start to work.
