Did you know South Africa’s pet economy is so extraordinary it’s become worthy of a national Pet Day?! 🐕 Consumers spend an estimated R8 billion annually on their 22 million pets, according to Shoprite Group’s latest reports on the growth and success of its standalone pet shops - Petshop Science - which opened in 2021. The group became the first local supermarket retailer to sell pet insurance in 2020, and discovered a gap in the market to make premium pet food and other veterinary-approved essentials available at supermarket prices. The Venture Capital in Africa Report 2024 is out, and for the 6th year running continues to do a fantastic job of capturing incisive insights into the African startup investment ecosystem. Some of the interesting takeaways include insights into funding and deal concentration and volumes by region, industry and maturity.
