#FinancialHistorian How Wars Are Paid For And WhyThe Rich Rarely Foot The Bill youtu.be/5ieF0TVtdmc?si=CTBRโ€ฆ Wars are not paid for with courage โ€” theyโ€™re paid for with debt, inflation, and time. In this episode of The Financial Historian, we break down how wars are really financed โ€” and why the burden rarely falls where public rhetoric suggests. From the Napoleonic Wars and the U.S. Civil War to World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the post-9/11 conflicts, history reveals a consistent financial structure: governments borrow heavily, expand money supply, and defer the true cost into the future. The result reshapes sovereign debt, inflation cycles, monetary policy, and wealth distribution for decades. This is economic history stripped of mythology โ€” a clear look at how the financial system absorbs conflict and how war finance quietly redistributes purchasing power. Understanding how wars are funded is not ideological โ€” itโ€™s essential financial education. Because borrowing, inflation, and interest payments donโ€™t disappear when the fighting stops. They compound. They restructure economies. And they influence who builds real wealth โ€” and who watches their purchasing power erode. Key Facts & Insights โ€ข During the Napoleonic Wars, Britainโ€™s national debt exceeded 250% of GDP, financed largely through bond markets that transferred interest payments to wealthy lenders for decades. โ€ข The U.S. Civil War introduced large-scale bond issuance and paper currency expansion (Greenbacks), triggering inflation and accelerating federal financial centralization. โ€ข World War I relied heavily on debt issuance across Europe and the United States, contributing to currency instability and, in Germanyโ€™s case, hyperinflation. โ€ข World War II pushed U.S. debt above 120% of GDP, later reduced through growth and inflation rather than immediate repayment. โ€ข The Vietnam War expanded deficits without proportional taxation, contributing to dollar pressure and the eventual collapse of Bretton Woods in 1971. โ€ข Post-9/11 wars were largely deficit-financed, adding trillions to U.S. sovereign debt with limited immediate tax increases. โ€ข Borrowing and inflation often shift long-term war costs toward wage earners and future taxpayers, while bondholders receive structured interest payments. Further Reading โ€ข The Wages of Destruction by Adam Tooze โ€” a powerful examination of how large-scale war economies reshape national financial structures. โ€ข Lords of Finance by Liaquat Ahamed โ€” a compelling look at how monetary decisions and war debt shaped the global financial order of the 20th century. If this gave you a new perspective, hit subscribe. History has the answersโ€”and Iโ€™ll show you where to look. #FinancialEducationโ€‹ #EconomicHistoryโ€‹ #WarEconomyโ€‹ #SovereignDebtโ€‹ #InflationExplainedโ€‹ #MoneyAndPowerโ€‹ #GovernmentSpendingโ€‹ #DebtCrisisโ€‹ #FinancialHistorianโ€‹ #thefinancialhistorianโ€‹ ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿ‰ #smgz #sgapuz_MAGA #DragonLadyArcher #FireDragonLadyArcher #Animo #AnimoLaSalle #HOARevolution #GeneralMinion #GodsSoulCatchers #WarriorsForChrist #HeavensArmy #PeopleOfGOD #Watchmen #Remnant #Chosen #Christian

I had the privilege of joining George Wiafe on JoyNews PM Express Business Edition to discuss Ghana's inflation dynamics, the role of official statistics in national development, and how the Ghana Statistical Service(GSS) ensures data integrity and credibility. This interview addressed key questions including the story behind Ghana's disinflation process, how GSS ensures data credibility through rigorous quality checks, why individual price experiences may differ from national averages, and how the Service is using technology and clearer communication to make statistics accessible for everyone. Statistics are only powerful when they are trusted, understood, and used. This interview reinforces our commitment at GSS to transparency, accessibility, and delivering evidence that supports better decisions for households, businesses, and policymakers. Watch the full discussion to understand the critical role the Ghana Statistical Service plays in contributing to Ghana's development. #GhanaInflation #PMExpress #DataIntegrity #GSS #EvidenceBasedPolicy #InflationExplained #GhanaEconomy

Zambiaโ€™s inflation slowed in May 2025, offering slight relief to consumers. The inflation rate reduced to 15.3%, marking a 1.2 percentage point decline month-on-month and a 1.4 percentage point decline year-to-date. However, compared to the same period last year, inflation remains slightly higher than the 14.7% recorded in May 2024, reflecting seasonal factors. Importantly, this is the lowest inflation rate since June 2024, when inflation stood at 15.2%. Consider a restaurant owner in Lilayi. Upon hearing that inflation has eased from 16.5% to 15.3%, she expects the price of chickens, a key input for her menu, to drop from K150 per bird to perhaps K140. Yet, when she visits the market, chickens have instead increased by 0.6%, consistent with the month-on-month food inflation recorded in May 2025. Confused, she wonders if the But this misunderstanding is common; a drop in inflation doesnโ€™t mean prices are falling, it simply means prices are rising more slowly than before. Inflation measures the rate of increase in prices, not the actual price level itself. A closer look at regional dynamics (See dashboard below) shows that Lusaka Province contributed the most to Mayโ€™s inflation, accounting for 4.5%, while North-Western Province contributed the least, at just 0.6%. This implies that the cost of living in Lusaka is rising at a faster pace than in North-Western Province, where price pressures are relatively subdued. Urban centres like Lusaka typically see faster increases in housing, transport, and food costs compared to rural or less economically active regions. This weekly dose comes just one week before the Zambia Statistics Agency is expected to release its inflation data among other statistics on Thursday next week, key data releases likely to shape market expectations and economic forecasts. Why do prices rise when there's "too much money"? When the Central Bank hikes the MPR (interest rate), it's trying to make borrowing expensive and saving attractive. Why? Because less borrowing = less spending. Less spending = less money in circulation. Less money = less demand. Less demand = price drops. Too much money chasing too few goods = inflation. So raising the MPR is like a vacuumโ€”it sucks excess cash out of the economy to cool things down. #Econs101 #NigeriaEconomy #InflationExplained
