Why does Islamic finance feel structurally broken? Because it is. It's stuck inside a riba house it was never meant to live in. It neither matches the returns, profitability and customer service of conventional banks, nor does it bear the true ethos of the shariah. What is supposed to be the most profitable and just system of finance, reduced to a limp, second-best feature for "conservative" Muslims. But it's not an impossible problem to solve. The global riba system that now dominates the world was not built by a coordinated master plan. It emerged from small, incremental innovations by individuals and single cities: - Giovanni Medici was one man from a family mostly known for crime. He built the first European banking empire based on diligent double entry bookkeeping. - Stockholms Banco introduced fractional reserve banking and widespread paper notes. It was founded by one entrepreneur. - The Amsterdam Exchange Bank brought standardized forex. Founded by one city council. None of these efforts were coordinated. Each one just solved a real problem in its time. Over centuries, those separate innovations compounded into the integrated riba system we now live under. Building something better follows the same logic in reverse. One serious project that actually embodies risk-sharing, asset-backing, and justice in its structure. Then another. One city or platform that proves it can work at scale without compromising principles. Then another. The current system feels permanent only because we’ve forgotten it was assembled piece by piece. It can be disassembled and replaced the same way....if enough people stop trying to decorate the old house and start building a new one from scratch.
