There is a bold experiment happening deep in the Amazon rainforest, using blockchains to fund indigenous ancestral stewardship through the advent of biocultural “jaguar credits”. It’s kind of like a carbon or biodiversity credit, but not tradable, and rooted in local governance and reciprocity.
Another way to describe it is like a “universal basic income” provided to a community of forest guardians, in recognition for their protection of a vast ecological commons, to meet the need for basic emergency health and education expenses. This is against the backdrop of rapid deforestation and destructive tipping points in the hydrological heart of our planet.
We sat down with Gregory Landua
@gregory_landua from Regen Network
@regen_network and Atossa Soltani
@asoltani from Amazon Sacred Headwaters
@AmazonHeadwater to discuss this groundbreaking Jaguar Credits pilot, and we specifically went deeper into some of the philosophical considerations and tensions. There is a shared commitment amongst stakeholders to openness and care in undertaking this initiative. Ma Earth @maearthmedia is here to help amplify the learnings and conversation.
Thank you to Sharamentsa, Fundación Pachamama
@FPachamama_Ec, Amazon Sacred Headwaters, Per Espen Stoknes
@estoknes, Regen Network, Regen Foundation
@RegenFdn, and the many others involved in these efforts. Let’s protect the forests and ancestral cultures, and evolve our financial tools to reflect right relationships with people and place.
