Excuse me, Congressman, but I don’t think we’re “taking away” resources; plenty are still available, just not on the American taxpayers’ dime! Check out free apps like Duolingo, Memrise, or LanguageTransfer to get started. Honestly, your statement sounds pretty ridiculous when you read it twice... expecting handouts while ignoring accessible solutions! 🤔

Check out LanguageTransfer. 100% free resource put together by this guy who is just obsessed with the pedagogy of languages. He has an extensive Greek audio course. In my opinion the methodology is very effective. Then focus on spaced repetition for vocab and comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen method). Wrote more about it here: mylessnider.substack.com/p/t…

Yes, you should. No, they aren’t. The game changer for me was the LanguageTransfer app; the most intuitive way to process learning a new language, have taken quantum leaps forward in comprehension and speech using it, after sputtering for years with Babble, Duolingo etc.

dump the bird and download LanguageTransfer; you’ll see quantum leaps forward comparatively
Today I'm walking away from a 378 duolingi streak. I'm done pretending to learn Spanish.

Very true. Lots of things to admire about Duolingo, but effectiveness is not one of them. I'm going to Italy next week and spent the last 3.5 months learning Italian. I feel like I have a very solid foundation. Here's what worked for me. - Daily audio lessons with Pimsleur. These are 30 min audio lessons that make really effective use of spaced repetition. They give you solid basics and it compounds. - Lingvist for vocabulary in context Lingvist is a great tool that teaches you vocabulary but (very importantly) that vocab is presented in the context of sentences instead of isolated on flashcards. Also makes great use of spaced repetition. Those were the two primary tools I used that made the biggest difference. Others I like: - LanguageTransfer or Michel Thomas Very similar methods of audio learning. Both very effective. I think pairing these with Pimsleur is fantastic. - Memrise A little too gamified for me, but it gives you really useful vocabulary, often in context, and makes use of spaced repetition. - Clozemaster This is a cool tool that also does vocabulary in context. It would be even better than Lingvist if it weren't for the fact that its spaced repetition algo is basically broken. Other than that it's a good tool, especially if you want ongoing practice after you've got good basics in a language. Italian is my third language after English and Spanish. The biggest thing I did different this time was that I didn't focus at all on memorizing grammar rules. I've come to the conclusion it's not worth it. Just get enough exposure to the language and your brain will fill in those rules. A lot of my current thoughts around language learning are informed by Stephen Krashen and his language acquisition model. @christiandean_ is building a cool tool called MotherStory that uses this model to teach. It works your brain a lot more than Duolingo, but it actually works better. I'm excited to keep exploring that as he builds it out.
Duolingo is a fascinating study in consumer "education." The app is fairly useless for language learning* but is wildly popular. 88.4M Monthly Active Users 6.6M Paid Subscribers $530M in FY 2023 Revenue $93.7M in FY 2023 EBITDA The kicker? $8.4B market cap. 2x bigger than Udemy Coursera combined. Shocking considering it is more edutainment than education.* Lessons: - Consumers often engage more with edutainment (competing with Candy Crush or TikTok) than education. There's a very weak correlation to effectiveness. (MasterClass is another example imho: low on learning, still very successful). - Duolingo still has a HUGE impact on language learning for millions of people because they are 1000x bigger. Even if they are 100x less effective than another language learning app, they can still provide 10x more value to the overall population. - Growth and EBITDA are significant better than Udemy/Coursera. The market loves profitable, fast-growing companies (why wouldn't they?) *Sorry, but its true. Duolingo is a fun game, but you can spend years on it and not be able to have a conversation in your language of choice.
