'If the US controls the Strait of Hormuz and charges rent, we are returning to colonial thinking' Kotak Mahindra Bank Founder Uday Kotak warned that the world may be witnessing a 'return of global colonialism'. Speaking at a FICCI event, Kotak cited remarks by US President Donald Trump — including “whoever wins the war keeps the spoils” and the possibility of charging rent if the US controlled the Strait of Hormuz. #UdayKotak #Geopolitics #GlobalEconomy #StraitOfHormuz #DonaldTrump #FICCI #LeadershipLanguage #GlobalTrade #CNBCTV18Digital

"Borrowing was considered not a very good thing to do." In this conversation with @ShereenBhan, Keki Mistry recalls a time when taking a loan carried social stigma - so much so that people hid their faces. "The India of 1981 and the India of 2025 are dramatically different." From creating private cubicles to building trust in a market with no template, he reflects on how HDFC helped shape India’s housing finance category - and how the country moved from the stigma of borrowing to an era of easy credit, while still treating home loans as life’s biggest financial decision. A rare first-hand account of India’s changing mindset around money, debt, and aspiration. "India cannot be a Jugaad nation." Marico's Harsh Mariwala is unequivocal as he speaks to @ShereenBhan about what frugal innovation truly means — and what it does not. Looking back at Marico’s journey, Mariwala says the biggest leaps in sales and market share came when innovation succeeded — even as he acknowledges that many ideas failed. "You have to continuously go on innovating… and be two steps ahead of others," he explains. Drawing a clear line between scalable innovation and shortcuts, he adds, "The biggest deterrent to innovation is the fear of failure." "Come what may, we will protect." That was @hcmariwala’s mantra when Marico faced its toughest challenger — Unilever. Parachute was 70% of the company’s turnover… and the threat was real. Mariwala reveals how Marico chose to sacrifice profits, stay transparent with shareholders, double down on advertising, pricing and distribution — and defend its leadership. And then came the turnaround: "We took them on… and nothing happened to our market share." And the twist? Years later, the company that once challenged them… ended up selling a brand to Marico. A rare story of conviction, clarity and competitive courage. As @KotakBankLtd marks 40 years, @udaykotak has a clear message for the industry: banks can no longer afford complacency. “Banks should not think about themselves as banks,” he warns. “They must think of themselves as being in the business of serving customers. The mindset that ‘we are a bank, we have a right to be lazy,’ is dangerous. The pool of savings in banking is under threat.” Kotak championed the idea of the “professional entrepreneur,” blending entrepreneurial instinct with professional rigour. He emphasises prudence, simplicity and humility as core values for any banker, alongside the importance of “risk-adjusted returns.” Catch Uday Kotak on Leadership Language tonight at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm, only on CNBC-TV18 @ShereenBhan #LeadershipLanguage #KotakMahindraBank #BankingOnChange #RiskAdjustedReturns #CNBCTV18Digital

#LeadershipLanguage | In the early 1980s, in a bustling Mumbai household where nearly sixty members of a Gujarati family shared one roof, a young man dared to dream differently. He could’ve taken the comfortable route, joining his family's cotton trading business, but Uday Kotak decided to take the road less taken. At just 26, with a loan of ₹30 lakh from family and friends, he launched a tiny bill-discounting venture. No pedigree in banking. No big backers. Kotak relied on a simple conviction: India needed financial institutions built on trust. Four decades later, that small venture would evolve into Kotak Mahindra Bank - India’s fourth-largest private lender and, since 2003, the first NBFC in India to convert into a full-fledged bank. As Kotak Mahindra Bank marks 40 years, Uday Kotak has a clear message for the industry: banks can no longer afford complacency. He emphasises prudence, simplicity and humility as core values for any banker, alongside the importance of “risk-adjusted returns.” His “four-quadrant theory” — Rama (right in letter and spirit), Krishna (right in spirit, pragmatic on letter), Duryodhana (wrong in spirit) and Ravana (wrong in both) — guides his ethical framework. “We must operate in the Rama quadrant, but if at all we need to move, Krishna is fine.” Watch the full episode on: cnbctv18.com/access/plans?ut… @ShereenBhan
