One of the most important qualifications I’ve ever completed — and I’ve done more than most bureaucracies know how to process — was my M.A. in Philosophy from Birkbeck. It’s fashionable now to sneer at philosophy, as though the act of learning how to think were an antique hobby, best left to dusty old men in tweed. But that’s the problem: we’ve built a world full of people who can use devices they don’t understand to express opinions they never learned to form. Philosophy, done properly, isn’t about quoting dead Greeks — it’s about dismantling bad arguments before they metastasise into policy. Logic, of course, I’d studied long before — mathematics, computation, engineering — all disciplines of order. But logic in mathematics is clean; logic in philosophy is human. It deals with ambiguity, manipulation, deceit, and the silent architecture of motive. It’s about building arguments that stand upright under scrutiny, and knowing when someone else’s collapses under its own cowardice. Philosophy teaches the geometry of truth — and nothing terrifies the modern world more than truth that can’t be rebranded. These days, the word “critical thinking” gets tossed around by people who’ve never met it. They call themselves “data-driven,” as if numbers could save them from incoherence. But numbers without logic are graffiti; reason without philosophy is just rhetoric with a spreadsheet. We’ve forgotten that propositions matter, that definitions shape discourse, that clarity isn’t optional. The university was meant for education, not for the distribution of career starter packs. #Education forms minds; it doesn’t hand out paychecks. Yet the modern student, groomed on the gospel of entitlement and the narcotic of state-fed propaganda, expects a guaranteed job as if it were an itemized line in their tuition invoice. #Degrees in #English and literature matter deeply. As someone with postgraduate work in mathematics and engineering, I can say without irony that my M.A. and M.F.A. made me a far better technical writer. Precision in language sharpens precision in thought; syntax is logic in motion. Education was meant to refine the individual — to shape intellect, culture, and civility. It was never a trade school for the pseudo-enlightened. Once, you were educated first — then you pursued a vocation. You learned how to think, how to reason, how to live in society.
