Progress is underway as @VMO2News takes its next step to retire its #3G networks. The switch off continues to take place in Norwich, Telford and Guildford on 16 July, followed by Torquay on 4 August. This follows the company’s successful pilot in Durham, which became the first city to have 3G withdrawn. The 2G and 3G switch off is happening gradually amongst mobile network operators in the lead up to 2033, to make way for faster, more efficient 4G and 5G networks. Out of this world connectivity 📡 @Ofcom has proposed for the UK to become the first country in Europe to authorise Direct to Device (D2D) satellite services for use in regular mobile brands. The introduction of this technology could help mobile operators improve their 4G and 5G coverage so customers can make satellite calls from their smartphones. The regulator will consult on these proposals until the 20 May, aiming to turn this proposal into a reality. If this goes ahead, they could begin authorising direct to device services later this year.
