🧑🌾 "We're losing 1,200 to 1,500 family farms a year in Minnesota… and it's not the market's fault."
Rebecca Whiting, a local small farmer (micro-dairy on just 6 acres) sat down and dropped some hard truths about Sen. Tina Smith's Livestock Consolidation Research Act of 2026.
The bill claims to "study" why a few giant corporations now dominate meat and dairy. But the farmer's take? The politicians have zero self-awareness.
Because of crushing federal and state regulations (the same rules for a 1,000-cow dairy apply to someone milking 3-4 cows), small farms can't afford to stay in business or add value like selling cheese or yogurt at the farmers market. One farmer is looking at nearly a million dollars in infrastructure just to sell cheese locally.
Meanwhile, corporate operations absorb the costs, small farms fold, and consolidation marches on.
This is classic cronyism dressed up as "research."
The libertarian answer is simple: Get government out of the way! Stop with one-size-fits-all rules that only the big players can meet.
Let small farmers, local markets, and voluntary cooperation do what they do best feed communities without the middleman or the mandate.
This is exactly the kind of issue Rebecca is fighting for. Small farms = resilient food system. Over-regulation = consolidation and fragility.
