Measurement technology may be becoming the next frontier in energy efficiency. More than 10% of Germany’s electricity consumption is associated with lighting. Researchers at National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) developed MultiSpeX, a new goniophotometer designed to measure lamp efficiency with what the institute describes as the world's highest accuracy. The goal is simple: understand light more precisely to optimize how it is generated, used, and improved. Key signals: • Two robotic arms nearly 5 meters long carry 16 measurement instruments • The system combines spectroradiometers, radiometers, and photometers • It measures visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light across multiple angles • It delivers highly accurate efficiency measurements in lumens per watt • The platform significantly expands capabilities beyond PTB’s previous system Why this matters: Small improvements in measurement accuracy can unlock better lamp designs, lower energy consumption, and more reliable performance.
