Random practice produces better long-term retention than blocked practice, yet most youth sessions rely on predictable drills. To solve complex problems on the pitch, players need contextual interference in training. #CoachingScience #MotorLearning

The foundation of elite football is not tactical understanding—it is motor schema formation. Prioritizing dribbling mastery ages 4–11 literally wires the brain for technical acquisition. Technique must precede tactics. #YouthFootball #MotorLearning

This is a practice I’ve used recently in Gaelic Football I’m using a method from CLA called “constrain to afford” It may seem weird I’m looking for counter pressing but giving the ball to attackers. However the constraint of getting a 2 pointer or a goal within 60 seconds may (and did) lead to balls short, rushed shots and ultimately turnovers. Then we are looking at “how do the attackers react to that?” Funny enough, done with 2 different teams, the pressure and stress of it also led to some brilliant goals and quickly worked 2’s without any coaching. Let the game be the first teacher. #constraintsledapproach #motorlearning #gaelicgames #skilldevelopment #principlesofplay

@MotorPreference 🧠 Sensation ≠ Reality. In one study, 56% of runners believed they struck with the mid/forefoot. Reality? ➡️ 89% were actually heel strikers. Why the disconnect? Because fitting in feels safe. Humans mirror the group to belong, even if it means misjudging their own movement. Be aware of the social pressure to conform. It can hijack perception and push you toward flawed models. Coaching starts when we stop copying and start understanding. ref : Larson, P. et al. (2011). Where should the brain store a memory? Turns out, it depends on how hard the task was. Prof. Sang Jeong Kim’s team uncovered a new principle showing that task difficulty determines how motor memories are transferred and stored in the brain—a finding that bridges neuroscience and AI theory.
