UBA Foundation Day Celebration: Rhythmic Movement & Wellness Workshop! NIT Rourkela, under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) initiative, organised a Rhythmic Movement and Wellness Workshop at Jhirpani High School on 11th November 2025 to promote holistic well-being among rural students. The programme focused on enhancing physical fitness, emotional balance, and creative expression through guided rhythmic activities subtly inspired by dance and mindful movement. Amazing article by Nishida et al., 2025 discussing the link of chronic inflammation and cancer. Not only does chronic inflammation increases the the initiation of tumorigenesis but it also fuels the progression and the development of metastasis as well. Not only unhealthy lifestyle choices contribute to chronic inflammation but so does different cancer treatments, cytokines associated with tumor development, and inflammation caused by infection as well. Chronic inflammation doesn’t just happen in cancer—it helps cause it, grow it, and spread it. As much as chronic inflammation is multifactorially linked to cancer, regular exercise (especially with a healthy diet and other healthy lifestyle choices) can play a strong role in the opposite effects to the relationship of chronic inflammation and cancer. Regular exercise not only reduces the effects of proinflammatory cytokines, but it also helps exert anti-inflammatory cytokines as well, such as IL-10 and IL-13. Regular exercise also helps to strengthen the immune system, especially when its weak. A strong immune system is able to fight against cancer in a better way. In addition, exercise in general reduces chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Staying active in general not only allows your body to be tougher for cancer to form and develop, but it makes the immune system tougher to fight off cancer as well. Exercise is better appreciated now as compared to the past but it's still undervalued as a primary approach to help prevent and treatment against cancer. Clinicians and people overall need to understand the true value of what movement can really provide in terms of prevention and treatment. Nishida A, Andoh A. No Life Half Lived 1 in 5 Report 2023 from @CHSScotland Five years ago, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland conducted the most comprehensive survey they had ever undertaken with people living with chest, heart or stroke conditions in Scotland. This helped them to set out their vision of No Life Half Lived in Scotland for the first time. Now, five years later, they have conducted an even larger survey through an independent research company to find out how people’s experiences have changed over the last five years, and to include people living with Long Covid for the first time. Estimating the burden of disease attributable to physical inactivity in Scotland A study published by Public Health Scotland (PHS) shows that 3,185 deaths, in addition to 11,474 disability-adjusted life years, are directly attributable to physical inactivity. Significantly, of the 3,815 deaths, they found that over 80% of those individuals were moving less than 30 min per week of moderate exercise. While they discovered regional differences throughout Scotland, the burden of disease associated with physical activity continues to be a significant cause of death for a notable portion of the population. Critically, this study highlights that people living with long-term health conditions have the biggest risks of mortality and are directly impacted by a lack of physical activity. @P_H_S_Official states that to reduce this burden of disease attributable to physical activity, we must focus on people who are the least active.
