In Dubzaron, back in the day, most of the downtime rolls were done by the players.
Yes, it could be abused easily.
It did limit what would have been an insurmountable workload for @Bdubs1776.
Only things that needed to be kicked up to him were things like “hey, Muppetlantis?”

We still had some fun in #Muppetlantis but by the time the DMs worked out the issues that made it not loom large or exciting in PCs minds (wrt ROI & story) it was too late and PCs conception couldn’t be changed. A new mega based on some of our #zeroprep theories will work

#Muppetlantis didn’t take off in #dubzaron as a tent pole dungeon bc it was designed specifically with #AppendixA
Players gauged the gp payouts weren’t good enough & the story elements too all over the place to matter.

Gygax is pretty clear in appendixA that it’s to save a DMs bacon when players take a turn he didn’t expect. It’s designed for about 4 hours of gaming then you abductive reason out what the rest of the dungeon may be about between sessions etc.

The entire #Muppetlantis thread grew out of downtime exploration of Kortes the Halfwit…eaten by dragons laired there.
Vampires ate most of our cavalry in session before we rediscovered the place.
We defeated the dragons in an epic Mass Combat.
And found almost no treasure.

Also, consider that when you prep the dungeon you preclude yourself from playing in it. Appendix A opens up the possibility of multiple DMs that can play on both sides of the same dungeon. No prep means no foreknowledge (except parameters which good players should know too).
