As a @upennnlp PhD, my office mates and I brought a couch into our office. It didn't fit, was in the way, but we didn't care. We loved the (already old) couch. ~17 years on, some of my group got a tour to see the couch. It's mostly in one piece! A piece of #nlpproc history.

The next conferences promotional videos presented at #NAACL2024 seem like a marketing pitch. Do we "scientists" need Hollywood-style videos to convince ourselves to submit a paper to a top NLP venue? Can we use this money to lower the barrier for underrepresented groups? It was unfortunate to see the organizers calling diversity in the participants that consist of less than 20% of the nations. You don't know what diversity is :) #nlpproc

How do LLMs represent and process syntactic structure? How do we separate out the effect of semantics when measuring for syntax? Video: youtube.com/watch?v=J6kyFd12โ€ฆ Paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2311.07497 Code: github.com/davidarps/spud #NAACL2024 #NLPProc We propose multilingual Nonce dependency treebanks in five languages; Arabic, English, French, German and Russian. We performed comprehensive experiments using both autoregressive and masked language models on word co-occurrence statistics and syntactic dependency probes. We found that while models indeed learn syntax independent of semantics, autoregressive language models and masked language models process syntactic knowledge differently.
