VAR IS GETTING MORE POWERFUL IN 2026 WORLD CUP
VAR is about to get even MORE involved at this World Cup.
Not just goals and penalties anymore.
Now? Corners. Second yellows. Fouls BEFORE set pieces. Even mistaken identity.
FIFA just gave VAR a massive upgrade. Here's what changed. 🧵👇
First big change: VAR can now review and overturn wrongly awarded corner kicks .
Yes, corners. A corner that should have been a goal kick? VAR can step in.
But only for "clear and obvious" errors. And it must not delay the restart.
Still. Think about how many matches are decided by set pieces. This is huge.
Second: VAR can now intervene for second yellow cards .
Before 2026? If a referee wrongly sent someone off with a second yellow, tough luck. No review possible.
Now? VAR can recommend a review. The referee can go to the monitor and overturn it.
First yellows still can't be reviewed. But second yellows? Fair game.
Third: Mistaken identity is now fully reviewable .
This already happened at the tournament.
USA vs Paraguay. Tim Ream got a yellow for a foul on Miguel Almiron.
VAR stepped in. Ream never touched him. Almiron had dived.
The yellow card got MOVED from Ream to Almiron. First time in World Cup history .
The rule worked exactly as designed.
Fourth: VAR can now catch fouls BEFORE a set piece is taken .
Remember those corner kicks where attackers shove defenders before the ball arrives?
VAR can now review that. If a foul happened before the restart, the referee can go to the monitor.
If it's serious? Disciplinary action. And the set piece might be retaken.
Defenders, be warned. That shove in the box? VAR is watching.
Fifth: New offside technology that changes EVERYTHING .
The delayed flag is almost gone. Assistant referees now get an audio alert in real-time if a player is more than 10cm offside .
They can raise the flag immediately instead of waiting for the play to end.
No more attackers running into defenders for 30 seconds only to find out they were offside anyway.
Safer for players. Less frustration for fans.
Also new: 3D avatars of every player have been scanned into the VAR system .
Every single one of the 1,248 players. One second in a scanning chamber.
The result? Crystal clear offside animations. No more guessing which body part was ahead.
Plus new "line of sight" technology to judge if a player was blocking the goalkeeper's view .
VAR is everywhere now. Love it or hate it, this is the future. 🎥
