Degenerates like MoldvayInc had 1:1 time explained to them many times. They don’t hate 1:1
#Jeffrogaxian time they hate that
#ObjectiveTruth is real. They hate that some claims are NOT opinions or preference. They hate that their disordered approach 2life risks the worm & flame
I've done this before, but it's been a while.
Benefits to using 1:1:
- Players all understand the speed at which time passes and can effectively plan, which turns time into a resource to be managed.
- Players now have a new fog of war, which allows the thief to commit crime while not under the watchful eye of the paladin, or they can take on their own investigation away from the party. This is true with most downtime methods, but when they have it consistently, it happens more often.
- Travel turns into a weighty decision because it now takes time. Want to travel for a week to another city? Sure, your downtime is travelling this week and we can either have a travel session or you can play other characters while your main party is travelling.
- It's easy to effectively manage multiple groups in one setting because everyone is on the same timeline.
- Seasons and holidays now match up with your game world. If it's winter IRL, it's probably winter in the game depending on the climate. There is no longer a need to run a Christmas or Halloween one-shot because if your setting celebrates something similar, it should occur in the same time of year in-game, so your players can experience these things in the game world.
- Your world feels more alive when it moves at the same speed as the real world. Players look forward to revisiting a place that they caused turmoil in 6 weeks ago because they want to know how their actions have changed things. 1:1 time facilitates this better than pause time.
- You don't have to make up an excuse for why the fighter suddenly left the party mid-quest when the player couldn't make the game session. He's just doing other things in town. No more disappearing/reappearing PCs.
The strange thing is, sometimes you *can* pause with a party in 1:1 if they can't make it back to town one week. Just give them an extra week of downtime when they get back to catch them up with real time. It's pretty simple.
