I was honored to speak at Hanover College for “People Power: King’s Legacy.” In my remarks, I lifted up Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring call to action — that the fight for justice is powered not only by great leaders, but by everyday people who choose courage, compassion, and accountability. I shared pieces of my own story — growing up in adversity, raising children while confronting systemic barriers, and finding strength through organizing. These experiences echo Dr. King’s message that justice must be lived, not just studied. I reminded the audience that the work ahead requires us to see the full picture — race, poverty, gender, incarceration, and housing are interconnected. Justice must be intersectional, and every one of us has a role to play. I closed with a call to action: let us not only admire Dr. King’s dream, but live it. People power means voting, protesting, serving, and showing up for our neighbors. Change is never easy or instant, but with resilience, hope, and love, we can continue to carry King’s legacy forward. Thanks to the ~ hundred residents (housed and unhoused) who came out to make their voices heard today, the plan to ram the “Encampment Abatement Policy” through City Council on Monday failed. Now CMs will have the opportunity to make substantial amendments, and there will be a more robust public process before this legislation is voted on.
