My opinion: Let’s be honest—if you’ve got 10K in this economy, just pay and get the job. Crying won’t help. Writing letters to the president? They’ll read it, smile, and shove it under the carpet. This is South Africa. Merit is a myth. At this point, survival has a price tag. #SAReality #UnemploymentCrisis #PayToWork

Almost 1 in 4 GP Partners have reduced their hours by an average of 1.7 sessions a week because of the AA taper. This is potentially 4 million lost appointments a year. No one should have to #paytowork - the Government must urgently scrap the AA taper. tinyurl.com/3p7rt774

Thanks @goldstone_tony in highlighting this …senior consultants who can help tremendously in reducing the waiting lists are unable to do this due to the punitive #TaxAndTaper resulting in #PayToWork@DanNeidle

Deffo agree on the ridiculous situation where £1 income at £100k can cost them £20k - completely stupid cliff edge causing obscene siutation where you can #PayToWork (right) But also interested in your view on the tapered AA @DanNeidle. You can draw a similar chart (left) for a mid career consultant in the NHS, where in a year with a pay rise (correcting many years of subinflation pay awards) tipping just £1 of additional pay can cause a extra tax pill of £22,500 (and for no possible additional benefit to pension). Would love to talk you through the maths of this one day! Consultants and other high earning public sector workers affected by both these tax cliffs, and its hitting waiting list recovery hard. Doctors can't #PayToWork at either tax cliff.

Great chart below/right from @TheIFS about ridiculous tax cliff at £100k cuasing *obscene* marginal tax rates. But you can draw a very similar chart (left) for higher earning doctors affected by the stupid & ill-conceived #taper which is **really damaging** waiting list recovery @wesstreeting @RachelReevesMP Doctors want to help with waiting lists, but they cannot #PayToWork RT if you want government to finally #ScrapTheTaper
Economists: people don't understand marginal tax. If your tax rate increases above £100,000, you don't suddenly lose money when you earn £100,001 UK tax system: hold my beer

Much worse than that @DrHWazir fall over cliff & can pay 1000s % tax #paytowork "The biggest issue is the #taper .... already have high salary...So, I’ve stopped doing additional sessions. All the while, we’re chronically understaffed nationally" Needs sorting @wesstreeting
There are 7.57 million people on NHS waiting lists. Doctors want to work extra hrs to reduce the backlog, but are taxed up to 70pc for doing so. This means they are working more hours for less pay. @RachelReevesMP tax rules are jeopardising NHS targets. telegraph.co.uk/money/taxed-…

This 👇@wesstreeting @TulipSiddiq Doctors can never #PayToWork
So it's real. Ortho surgeon. Huge (>1yr) waiting list. Very close to taper. Work hard seeing NHS patients Mon to Fri. Keen to operate more NHS on weekends, fix up more people! ---> Can't, as will be massively stung by AA. @goldstone_tony So: I'll twiddle thumbs on the w/e.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: if the government wants to achieve its mission of reducing waiting lists, as do we all, maybe don’t charge up to 1,000,000% marginal rates of tax on overtime thanks to the stupid #taper #taxcliffe 👇@wesstreeting See the example below produced by GOVERNMENT in THEIR submission to DDRB. It shows how just £2 extra income in this case triggered *additional tax* of £22,026 - that’s a marginal tax rate of 1,101,300% !!!! Doctors want to help, but it’s never fair to expect anyone to ever #PayToWork @DanNeidle RT if you want to get rid of tapering @TheBMA
1/4 When even @DHSCgovuk are having to point out how useless the #taper tax is, you know its time to review this @TulipSiddiq @RachelReevesMP @wesstreeting In government's submission to DDRB today they give an example showing a £2 increase in non-pensionable income causing a

The bottom line is that AA #Taper (& similar child care issue) dreadfully designed taxes with inbuilt #cliffedges are potent drivers to prevent some doctors being willing or able to take on work (or need to reduce current work). RT if no-one should ever have to #PayToWork

.@BenZaranko from @TheIFS described IFS chart(lt) as "bonkers". He was absolutely correct- huge disincentive to do more work / earn more We'd love to meet up with @PJTheEconomist again to update him on pension tax again, as v similar "bonkers" position in NHS (rt) #PayToWork
This is bonkers. The cliff edge in eligibility for free childcare means anyone who has young children and is (lucky enough to be) earning £101k is many thousands of pounds worse off than someone earning £99k. Big incentives to go part-time or ramp up salary sacrifice.

10/ Finally slightly concerning response from Treasury who proclaimed LTA was abolished to 'ensure consultants can "work the hours"'. Maybe treasury should ask if THEY would give up their weekend to do extra lists & #PayToWork Need to find a solution to this quickly Pls RT!

1/ These are the simple options, for this specific consultant (everyone will be different). But yes @simonirving74 options are broadly as you say 1) Thery carry on working alt weekends & pay extra £22.5k AA tax maintaining pre-tax income but £10k worse off overall #PayToWork
So am I right in thinking there are only really 3 options in this scenario… 1) Pay the tax bill out of salary and be worse off now 2) Pay the tax bill via scheme pays, for reduced pension in the future 3) Do no extra work and maintain pay for now and pension in the future? 🤯🤯

Getting lots of private comments like the one below (with permission) This from a cancer radiologist having to stop extra waiting list work "immediately" to not end up #PayToWork As this cancer specialist says "poor patients" This is urgent @wesstreeting @jamesmurray_ldn
1/ 🚨IMPORTANT: We need to meet again @jamesmurray_ldn @wesstreeting to talk about pension tax. Houston, we have a big problem #PayingToWork #TaperTaxHell James & Wes would like to talk you through this REAL case study (shared with permission) 👇[& others] Please share/RT

11/ As I said we need to meet again urgently to discuss before higher earners start taking actions i.e. reduce extra work, stopping additional PAs (also non-pensionable). Now pay awards are known, penny will start to drop. People won't, and shouldnt, #PayToWork Please share/RT
