Strengthening Partnerships for Kenya’s Population and Development Agenda. Today, the National Council for Population and Development convened a National Stakeholders’ Coordination Meeting at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, bringing together government agencies, development partners, and key stakeholders to advance the implementation of the Kenya National Population Policy. In remarks delivered by Acting Director General Lucy Kimondo, the Council emphasized the critical role of population dynamics in shaping Kenya’s socio-economic transformation. With emerging trends such as rapid urbanization, shifting demographics, and climate-related challenges, the need for coordinated, data-driven, and sustainable approaches has never been more urgent. The meeting highlighted the importance of strengthened partnerships, innovative financing, and effective coordination mechanisms to ensure successful implementation of population programmes. Stakeholders also engaged in discussions on the revised Population Programme Coordination Framework, aimed at enhancing collaboration at both national and county levels. In addition, participants were taken through a series of presentations on key policy briefs derived from the recently launched Population Situation Analysis (PSA) Report. These briefs addressed critical thematic areas including youth not in education, employment or training (NEET), skills development and TVET, maternal and child health, health financing, urbanization, family dynamics, and the intersection of population, health, and environmental sustainability. The discussions provided evidence-based insights to inform policy direction, strengthen programming, and guide targeted interventions across sectors. As Kenya continues to align its population priorities with Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, collective action remains key to improving the quality of life for all. Together, we move forward, coordinated, committed, and focused on sustainable development. #NCPD #PopulationAndDevelopment #Partnerships #Vision2030

POPULATION AT THE CENTER OF DEVELOPMENT Prof. Alfred Agwanda, Director - Population Studies, and Research Institute, UON: We need to expand training programs. Currently, we are the only institution offering this specialized training, and we must scale up our efforts. With staff leaving institutions such as NCPD and KNBS, there is a growing gap in skilled personnel. The country needs adequate manpower to collect, analyze, and utilize population data for development planning. Strengthening capacity in this area will enable more effective participation in building a better Kenya for tomorrow. #KenyaPopulation #PopulationSituationAnalysis #KenyaData #DemographicDividend #PopulationAndDevelopment #EvidenceBasedPolicy #YouthAndDevelopment #KBCniYetu ^JM

POPULATION AT THE CENTER OF DEVELOPMENT Dr. Mohamed Sheikh, Director General - NCPD: On data and research, Kenya has not performed as well as it should. We rely on both administrative data and survey data, but they are often fragmented. In the launch of data-driven reports tomorrow, 18th February 2026, we propose establishing a centralized data center to integrate and harmonize data from both administrative and survey sources. This will ensure accuracy, improve decision-making, and help move the country forward. However, we must acknowledge that we have not invested sufficiently in this sector, and greater commitment is needed to strengthen data systems and research capacity. #KenyaPopulation #PopulationSituationAnalysis #KenyaData #DemographicDividend #PopulationAndDevelopment #EvidenceBasedPolicy #YouthAndDevelopment #KBCniYetu ^JM

POPULATION AT THE CENTER OF DEVELOPMENT Dr. Mohamed Sheikh, Director General - NCPD: Population is not just a statistic or a number. It is about people - their needs, priorities, and aspirations. We must take a deep dive to understand these realities so that we can plan effectively. Proper planning enables people to live better lives, interact responsibly with their environment, and promote sustainable development. That is why we have initiatives such as the Population, Health, Environment, and Conservation (PHEC) program, which integrates these critical areas. #KenyaPopulation #PopulationSituationAnalysis #KenyaData #DemographicDividend #PopulationAndDevelopment #EvidenceBasedPolicy #YouthAndDevelopment #KBCniYetu ^JM

POPULATION AT THE CENTER OF DEVELOPMENT Dr. Violet Murunga, Senior Research and Policy Analyst - AFIDEP: Building climate resilience requires policies that effectively integrate environmental concerns across all sectors. Ultimately, it comes down to people’s behavior - how they interact with their environment and how their actions either protect or harm it. Sustainable change begins with awareness, responsible decision-making, and collective commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations. #KenyaPopulation #PopulationSituationAnalysis #KenyaData #DemographicDividend #PopulationAndDevelopment #EvidenceBasedPolicy #YouthAndDevelopment #KBCniYetu ^JM

KENYA NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR POPULATION AND DEVELOPMENT BILL, 2023 The Director General of the National Council for Population and Development @DrAbeySheikh appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget to brief members on the Kenya National Council for Population and Development Bill, 2023 (National Assembly Bills No. 72 of 2023), which was passed by the National Assembly and committed to the Senate for concurrence. The Bill seeks to strengthen NCPD’s legal and institutional framework by transforming the Council from an agency established under a Legal Notice into a fully-fledged statutory body through an Act of Parliament. Once enacted, the Bill will: ✅ Provide NCPD with statutory authority to coordinate and monitor population and development programmes across national and county governments. ✅ Empower the Council to develop regulations and standards for effective policy implementation. ✅ Guarantee institutional continuity, as required under the Statutory Instruments Act (2013). ✅ Enhance Kenya’s capacity to align with regional and global population and development commitments, including the ICPD25 Nairobi Commitments and Vision 2030. The Bill’s development was guided by extensive public participation and stakeholder engagement from 2017 to 2023, involving youth, women leaders, Parliamentarians, and development partners. Dr. Sheikh reaffirmed NCPD’s commitment to providing leadership in population policy management to ensure that population dynamics are effectively integrated into Kenya’s development planning framework under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). #NCPD #KenyaSenate #NCPDBill #PopulationandDevelopment #PublicPolicy #BETA #Vision2030
