if you can do it again: procstat -kk <pid of nginx>
can give you the stack trace from the kernel side where it is stuck (only way kill -9 would not work)

I'd try removing that line from the loader.conf, booting, and manually kldload snd_hda. If that gets stuck, procstat -kka | grep kldload should show where it is stuck. Or you can use kgdb, switch threads to the kldload thread, and get a stack trace.

FreeBSD's base is full of interesting tools.
tcsh(1) is a great interactive shell.
fortune(6) prints tips and jokes.
procstat(1) prints lots of details about processes (usually available under /proc in linux).
script(1) records your session.
There's much more!

My checkrestart tool grew out of procstat(1)/libprocstat(3). You can practically make it a one-liner:
procstat -av | awk '$4~/..x/&&$10=="vn"&&$11=="" { print $1}' | sort -u | xargs ps

"procstat" plugin from #AWS #CloudWatch is a charm for application monitoring in EC2 instances.
While there are many other plugins and tools to do the same, I found #procstat the best with CloudWatch as full proof solution.
