A few days ago, my boss shared a tragic incident that happened at a filling station. A worker was asked to enter a confined space to carry out maintenance work. Unfortunately, the job was approached without the proper safety procedures, permits, gas testing, rescue plan, or specialized equipment required for confined space entry.
Believing it was a routine task, the worker entered the space. Within moments, he was overcome by hazardous gases and a lack of oxygen. By the time help arrived, it was too late. What should have been a normal workday ended in the loss of a human life.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder that confined space work is not a task for just anyone. Such activities should only be performed by trained professionals who possess the necessary knowledge, certifications, permits, and safety equipment. Proper risk assessment, atmospheric testing, ventilation, personal protective equipment, standby personnel, and emergency rescue arrangements are not optional, they are lifesaving requirements.
No amount of money is worth risking your life. If a job requires specialized training or safety permits and those requirements are not in place, it is better to stop the work than to become another preventable statistic. At the end of the day, every worker deserves to return home safely to their family.
Safety is not an inconvenience; it is a responsibility. Your life is worth far more than any paycheck.
