A few days ago, my boss shared a tragic incident that happened at a filling station. A worker was asked to enter a confined space to carry out maintenance work. Unfortunately, the job was approached without the proper safety procedures, permits, gas testing, rescue plan, or specialized equipment required for confined space entry. Believing it was a routine task, the worker entered the space. Within moments, he was overcome by hazardous gases and a lack of oxygen. By the time help arrived, it was too late. What should have been a normal workday ended in the loss of a human life. This incident serves as a powerful reminder that confined space work is not a task for just anyone. Such activities should only be performed by trained professionals who possess the necessary knowledge, certifications, permits, and safety equipment. Proper risk assessment, atmospheric testing, ventilation, personal protective equipment, standby personnel, and emergency rescue arrangements are not optional, they are lifesaving requirements. No amount of money is worth risking your life. If a job requires specialized training or safety permits and those requirements are not in place, it is better to stop the work than to become another preventable statistic. At the end of the day, every worker deserves to return home safely to their family. Safety is not an inconvenience; it is a responsibility. Your life is worth far more than any paycheck. #SafetyFirst #ConfinedSpaceEntry #OccupationalSafety #WorkplaceSafety #HSE #HealthSafetyEnvironment #SafetyAwareness #PermitToWork #RiskAssessment #IndustrialSafety #ProcessSafety #SafetyCulture #IncidentPrevention #LifeOverProfit #StaySafe #EnvironmentalHealthAndSafety #SafetyLeadership #WorkSafe #EngineeringSafety #EveryoneGoesHome

Engineering Safety: Building safer construction sites begins with building safer professionals. The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), with support from Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF), continues to spearhead a transformative programme aimed at strengthening safety culture within Kenya’s construction industry. The initiative focuses on equipping engineering students, practitioners, and construction workers with practical safety knowledge and skills through curriculum development, industry short courses, construction site monitoring tools, and policy reforms designed to enhance compliance and reduce workplace accidents. @EngineersBoard convened a finalization workshop bringing together stakeholders from academia, industry, and regulatory institutions, with support from DOSH, to streamline and finalize 11 identified industry short courses and advance the development of safety policy frameworks for the construction sector. Since the launch of the programme, key milestones achieved include nationwide stakeholder surveys, establishment of technical working groups, strategic engagements with industry regulators, curriculum development for engineering students, and the design of monitoring tools to strengthen safety compliance on construction sites. Through collaboration, innovation, and capacity building, EBK remains committed to fostering a proactive safety culture and supporting safer infrastructure development across Kenya’s engineering value chain. #CapacityBuildingKe #EngineeringSafety

On October 29, 2013, a fire erupted in a wind turbine at the Piet de Wit wind farm in Ooltgensplaat, Netherlands, trapping four maintenance workers. Two engineers, aged 19 and 21, were unable to escape and lost their lives, while two others managed to survive. This incident underscored the critical need for enhanced safety measures in the wind energy sector. #WindEnergy #TragicIncident #EngineeringSafety
