“Marine Veteran Turns the Tables on Armed Teen Robbers: Training and Instinct Prevail”
A Maryland Marine veteran showed why law-abiding citizens trained in self-defense are the best deterrent to street crime. Jheyco Borda, 35, was working on his truck in Oxon Hill Wednesday afternoon when four hooded teenagers approached, escalating a casual moment into an attempted armed robbery.
Surveillance footage captured the brazen attack. One teen pulled a gun and pointed it at Borda. “I saw six kids come by playing around… and out of the corner of my eye, they stepped in front of my car,” Borda told Telemundo44. “I saw them put on a face mask. As soon as I figured that one out, I was like, something’s about to go down.”
The teens demanded his truck keys and phone. Borda handed over the phone, then seized the split-second distraction. “When he got distracted looking at my phone, that was the moment I grabbed the gun out of his hand,” he said. Borda lunged, sparking a fierce struggle. His brother, who plans to enlist in the Air Force, rushed out to help disarm the attacker.
Two teens backed off while another joined the fray, but the brothers—relying on Marine-honed instincts—overpowered all four. “We are trained to fight or flight and it was my instinct in a split second,” Borda told WUSA9.
“Every split second counts a lot, and they teach us that in there.” The gun discharged during the chaos, putting a hole in Borda’s truck, but thankfully no one was injured.
The pair held the suspects until Prince George’s County Police arrived. All four teens were taken into custody.
This incident underscores the importance of personal responsibility, Second Amendment rights, and the value of military training in a time when soft-on-crime policies have emboldened youthful predators. Law-abiding veterans and citizens should not have to become victims—thankfully, this Marine was ready.
